RoBi-X is a range of partnership programmes, where Blue Ocean Robotics and a partner company collaborates and invests in the design, development and commercialisation of a unique robotic solution for a specific challenge and/or realisation of an unexploited business opportunity. RoBi-X consists of 3 partnership programmes: RoBi-Design, RoBi-Develop and RoBi-GoToMarket.

RoBi-Design is a partnership programme for developing unique robot concepts to solve specific challenges and for realisation of unexploited business opportunities. RoBi-Design is an option when there is no existing economic or technical solution available.

Production companies and other organisations often have processes or tasks that are carried out manually, or not at all, because of lack of appropriate technology or solutions. The potential in applying robotics for automation of manual processes in the production, delivery or service is often increased productivity, quality, working environment etc.

Robotics can additionally be useful for redesigning and automating existing products, in order to improve their competitive parameters or even create new applications and hence also business potentials.

Often, the reason that these manual processes and untapped business potentials are not being realised, is that the payback period for the development and implementation is too long for the company itself or that the appropriate solution is not found, accessible and profitable for the company.

The RoBi-Design method

Based on this, Blue Ocean Robotics has developed the partnership model, RoBi-Design. RoBi-Design is a partnership between Blue Ocean Robotics and your company, where both parties invest in the concept development and pre-commercialisation of a unique robotic solution for a specific challenge or unexploited business opportunity. RoBi-Design is therefore not a consultancy service, but a partnership and close collaboration between both parties, with Blue Ocean Robotics as the coordinator and project manager.

RoBi-Design is based on a stage-gate inspired R&D process, which first aims to decompose and analyse the specific challenge, and thereafter to generate and develop a robot concept in close dialogue with relevant stakeholders and end-users to ensure the development of the most value-adding robot solution.

Benefits with RoBi-Design can be summarized to the following main points:

  • A fully developed robot concept for a specific challenge.
  • Multidisciplinary concept development with involvement of relevant staff groups, business processes, end-users, as well as relevant stakeholders in the market.
  • A well-described robot concept that can be used as a basis for applying for external funding (funds/investors) to prototype development and/or implementation in the company.
  • Possibility of co-ownership of the product and derived business.

RoBi-Design cases:

A RoBi-Design project is typically followed by a RoBi-Develop project, where a fully functional prototype is being developed and tested based on a robot concept, and where the product is being fully developed, commercialised and prepared for production and market launch. RoBi-Develop is a subsequent partnership programme, where the robot concept from the previous RoBi-Design project is being fully developed, a fully functional prototype is being developed and tested, and the final product is being commercialised and prepared for production and market launch.

Starting point and leap

  • A developed robot concept from a RoBi-Design project or external partner
  • Partnership and co-ownership
  • Funding allocated from public agency or investor

Process and involvement

  • The RoBi-Develop process is well documented
  • Roles must be clarified and planned – shared responsibility and joint follow-up
  • Milestone based development with tight expense control

Technical outcome

  • Market qualified prototypes
  • Testing for functionality, easy-of-operation and robustness completed
  • Necessary (CE-) markings and qualifications obtained
  • Production plan and scale-up scenario identified

Market outcome

  • Reference customer feedback and testimonials
  • Business case validated in the market
  • Marketing plan completed and an initial go-to-market strategy implemented

Decision point

  • A new robot solution introduced in the market

RoBi-GoToMarket is the final of the RoBi-X partnership programmes and is specifically made for technology companies and integrators that wish to transform their engineered installations into standardised robotics solutions. The RoBi-GoToMarket programme also includes commercialisation, marketing and sales through international sales channels.

Starting point and leap

  • A market introduced non-standard robot solution from external partner or from a RoBi-Develop process
  • A RoBi-GoToMarket agreement with joint go-to-market plan
  • Sales and support partnership in the market
  • Initial co-investment in the market build-up

Process and involvement

  • Initially joint customer visits and offerings to customers
  • Development of sales plans and qualified markets
  • Identifiers for creating a standardised solution

Technical outcome

  • Qualified market feedback on hardware and software
  • Possible improved or 2nd generation solutions
  • Need for product variants or new solutions as input for RoBi-Design

Market outcome

  • Identified scale-up potential evaluated
  • Many (local) reference customers in place
  • Competitors in the market identified; differentiators for the solution described and in the product road-map

Decision point

  • A standardised robot solution developed as a Blue Ocean Robotics’ product
