Solid Annual Report from Blue Ocean Robotics

Blue Ocean Robotics from Odense presents a solid annual report despite the focus on development and a new business strategy. 2018 shows a satisfactory result after tax of 2 million DKK in Blue Ocean Robotics Holding and 5 million DKK in the Blue Ocean Robotics operating company. Blue Ocean Robotics develops, produces and sells professional service robots in healthcare, hospitality, construction, and agriculture, such as the UV Disinfection Robot to eliminate bacteria and reduce infection rates at hospitals, which moreover won the prestigious international IERA Award 2019 in Montreal, Canada last week.

“It is a really great result for our holding and operating company in a phase where most robots in the portfolio are still under development, while at the same time we are investing heavily in expanding global sales through a reseller network”, says a happy Claus Risager, CEO in Blue Ocean Robotics in Odense.

Blue Ocean Robotics develops professional service robots from problem, idea and design to development, commercialization, market scale-up and all the way to exit. Each robot is moved into its own subsidiary which is responsible for scaling sales globally. The subsidiary acts as a venture company, since the goal is an exit and divestment of the robot business at the right time. This means that Blue Ocean Robotics is the world’s first Robot Venture Factory.

“We expect a growth in sales of more than 500 percent over the next few years, so we measure sales in hundreds for some robots and in thousands for other of our robots. The growth for service robots is at 26 percent annually, resulting in a doubling of the market in 3 years, where today, around 100,000 robots are sold annually. Thus, the market need is enormous and is increasing, not least because of the increased attention on productivity, quality and working environment. Not all markets are growing at the same rate, for example, we can see that the UK, United States and Saudi Arabia among others are growing quite rapidly right now. Based on the good result already, we expect a large growth in our revenue over the next 2-3 years. But as we are also investing heavily in expanding our reseller network globally, it is not certain that we can repeat the great result until a couple of years from now”, says a satisfied Claus Risager, and continues:

“With our well-tested robot modules we can quickly create completely new types of robots that improve quality, working environment and productivity within a number of fields such as cleaning, care of animals and plants, inspection and maintenance, construction, hotel service and disinfection. We are only limited by imagination. All these many robots are built based on the same robot modules, so it gives Blue Ocean Robotics a great potential for adding more robots in the portfolio over time, and the ability to create them faster, better and cheaper than competitors can.”

Medical director at OUH Odense University Hospital, Peder Jest, sees a great need for service robots in the health sector. He says:

“Hygiene conditions are very important. For example, the fight against multi-resistant bacteria is an increasingly important task for all health institutions from hospitals to nursing homes. With the growing shortage of labour, we simply need to use technology and automation here for both existing and new institutions.”
